Use sensible network security
- Set network passwords and change them regularly. See your computer's instructions.
- Use a good quality antivirus software to protect your computers. Update it regularly with latest virus upgrades.
- If you enable file sharing on your computer, you should not share your system files and should protect shared folders with a password. See your computer's instructions for information on setting up file sharing.
- If carrying sensitive information (e.g. corporate environment), you should use VPN type (Virtual Private Network) technology to protect your data. Follow guidelines from your company's network administrator.
NAT Firewall
Most consumer Broadband services in the UK use NAT (Network Address Translation) to assign an address to your Broadband Modem. The Voyager 2091 modem takes care of passing data through to the correct computer on your network. Only the NAT address is visible from the outside world and your computers are therefore protected against direct intrusion.
NAT is enabled by default in your Voyager Broadband modem and you should not have to change any settings to benefit from NAT.
Securing your networkFirst you need to decide the type of wireless security you want to use.
The Voyager 2091 is preset with wireless security, so it protects your data without further configuration. The default setting uses 128-bit WEP. Your Wireless Network Key can be found on the coloured label on the base of your product.
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is the security used as standard in older 802.11b wireless networks. The Voyager 2091 has a WEP 128-bit default setting to maintain compatibility if it is used with older products.
Customers may choose to change from the default WEP encryption if they prefer, but would not need to do so unless they wanted to change the Wireless Network Key provided with the product.
Enable WPA encryption
WPA, WPA2, WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is the next generation of security for wireless networks. WPA-PSK is the version of WPA specific for the home or small office users because it does not require an authentication server. With WPA-PSK, your network key is regularly and automatically changed so hackers cannot decode the key by listening to your connection. Please make sure that the wireless adapter on your computer is able to support WPA prior to changing the wireless settings on the Voyager 2091 router.
Select WPA-PSK if:
- All your wireless adapters support WPA. Check your wireless adapter's specification.
- You wish to benefit from the additional security offered by WPA over standard WEP.
To set-up WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2 or WPA2-PSK security:
- Start your Internet browser and browse to http://192.168.1.1/ to open the configuration manager.
- Select the Advanced | Wireless | Encryption screen,
If prompted, enter your Configuration Manager access password (factory default is admin for both user name and password) - Select WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2 or WPA2-PSK
- Enter Pre-Shared Key. The key can be any string of between 8 and 64 characters. All other options can be ignored unless you have specific security requirements.
Important: Make a note of the key somewhere safe: you will need it later to connect your wireless adapters.
Click Apply to save your changes - Your computer will lose its wireless connection with the Voyager 2091. You now need to configure your wireless adapters with matching security settings. Please refer to your wireless adapter's instructions.
Change WEP Encryption:
